Students Selected For District Orchestra

Five students from Elizabethtown Area High School performed at the 2019 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 Orchestra Festival. Twelfth-graders Sean Brown, violin; Mayelin Ebersole, viola; and Lexis Ferree, violin, as well as 11th-graders Samuel Becker, string bass, and Claire Fritz, violin, joined more than 100 other students from central Pennsylvania at the festival.

Dr. Thomas Hong from the University of Pennsylvania was the guest conductor for the ensemble. The concert was held at Central Dauphin High School. The ensemble performed the orchestral suite "Scheherezade," a four-movement work, and Brown was the featured soloist in the third and fourth movements.

Selection to the District 7 Orchestra is highly competitive, involving student musicians from schools located in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. A team of local music teachers served as judges, selecting the students to the ensemble.

Richard Winey, orchestra director for Elizabethtown Area High School, said the students worked for months to prepare to earn a seat in the ensemble.

PMEA is a statewide nonprofit organization supporting music education, learning, and performance as well as promoting and supporting music education in schools and communities. PMEA is affiliated with the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).
