H.O.P.E., 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, will offer Kids Under Construction (KUC), a support group for children ages 6 to 12 who have someone in their immediate family with cancer. The program is six weeks long and will meet twice a month on select Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m., beginning in March.
In the KUC program, emotions will be explored through art therapy. To help alleviate the stress they may be feeling, children will be encouraged to share about their feelings through art and games.
KUC will also be focused on having fun and bonding with other children who are going through similar situations while being mentored by knowledgeable adults. Children in families that are battling with cancer often have to assume responsibilities beyond their years. In addition to school, homework, and regular chores, children may be called upon to provide care to the patient and assist with younger siblings. Because of this, some meetings will be dedicated to having fun.
To learn more or to register a child to participate in KUC, readers may call H.O.P.E. at 717-227-2824 or visit http://www.hopeforcancerfamilies.org.
