Free, confidential tax preparation for low- to moderate-income seniors will be available by appointment on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. To schedule an appointment, readers may call the center.
Assistance is available for federal Form 1040, state tax form PA-40, local earned income tax, and Pennsylvania property/rent rebates. Assistance cannot be provided for large numbers of stock transactions, casualty losses, or income from farms, businesses, or rental properties.
People seeking assistance should bring photo identification; their Social Security card; all statements showing wages, including interest, dividends, pensions, Social Security income, and unemployment; Affordable Care insurance payments; any documents marked "save for income tax purposes"; documentation showing the original purchase price of sold assets, such as stock sales; and a copy of the previous year's tax return with all supporting tax documentation. For property or rent rebates, people should bring their 2018 property tax bills marked "paid" or a rent certificate signed by their landlord stating the amount of rent paid in 2018.
On Friday, Feb. 15, Movie and Munchies will be offered at 11 a.m. Hot dogs will be provided, and the movie "Saving Mr. Banks" will be shown. Registration is required by Tuesday, Feb. 12.
A lunch celebrating Senior Independence Month will take place on Monday, Feb. 18, at noon. Soup, sandwiches and dessert will be served, and attendees may take part in icebreaker group games, featuring prizes. Reservations are required by Thursday, Feb. 14.
A Lunch and Learn program will take place on Monday, March 4, at noon. Josh Jenkins will speak about estate planning, including what people can do by themselves, when to hire professionals, and how to manage one's required minimum distribution. Lunch will be ham, potato, and green beans, as well as dessert. Reservations are required by Thursday, Feb. 28.
The center will host meetings of diabetes support groups facilitated by a licensed practical nurse from Penn State. Discussion topics will include coping, barriers, diet, and exercise. The Type 1 diabetes support group will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The Type 2 diabetes support group will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
The senior center has announced several trips. There is a fee for each trip.
A trip to the Poconos will be offered on Wednesday, April 24. The trip includes a concert by a Barry Manilow impersonator and a Bette Midler impersonator, a lunch buffet and free time at Mount Airy Resort and Casino. The group will depart the senior center at 9:30 a.m. and return at approximately 8 p.m. Registration is due by Friday, March 22.
The Blue Angels Experience will take place on Tuesday, May 21. The trip will include free time in downtown Annapolis, Md.; time for participants to purchase lunch; and a cruise into the bay to watch the Blue Angels pilots on their practice day. Participants will depart from Mohler Center at 7 a.m. and return at approximately 7:30 p.m. following a stop for dinner. Registration is due by Friday, March 15.
A trip to the Museum of the Bible and Arlington National Cemetery will take place on Thursday, Aug. 1. The Museum of the Bible includes the Dead Sea Scrolls, New Testament writings, stories of the Bible, and more. At Arlington, trip participants will see the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, the U.S. Coast Guard Memorial, the gravesite of John F. Kennedy, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and other points of interest. The group will depart at 6:30 a.m. and return at approximately 9 p.m. Registration is due by Monday, July 1.
A trip to see "Come From Away" on Broadway will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The fee includes motorcoach transportation, a luncheon, and orchestra seats at the show. Attendees will depart at 7 a.m. and return at about 9:30 p.m. Reservations are required by Thursday, May 9.
