The Hempfield Foundation has named Richard Packer as the first executive director of the nonprofit, which is devoted to promoting and enhancing excellence in education across the Hempfield School District by providing independent financial support for innovative projects and scholarships.
Packer's career history within professional sports and business includes executive leadership in public, private, and entrepreneurial settings. As executive director of a United Way youth organization, Packer's leadership increased revenues by more than 800 percent. While serving as executive director of a Florida public school district's nonprofit educational foundation, he established a variety of school support programs funded by revenues that increased 688 percent over his tenure.
While Packer was the head men's basketball coach of Northampton County Community College, his teams produced a winning percentage of .781, two regular season championships, four tournament championships, and the Pennsylvania Junior College State Championship. In the private sector, while serving as vice president of an Atlanta-based financial services firm, Packer recruited, hired, field-trained and supervised more than 150 financial services licensed field agents in both insurance and investment advising. He also served as president and COO of the American Basketball Association, for which he created, developed, and administered corporate business plans of more than 60 league teams and also oversaw the day-to-day league operations of the regular season and playoffs.
Packer's hiring at the Hempfield Foundation occurs as the organization seeks to broaden its growth in grant programs and scholarship gifts, development and outreach, fundraising events, business partnerships, and alumni relationships.
A volunteer board of Hempfield residents oversees the foundation's operations, raises and allocates funds, and invests capital to grow over time as a perpetual endowment for the community. To date, the foundation has donated more than $685,000 to students, staff, and programs within the Hempfield School District through the support of the community.
