A Smart Driver driving class for people age 50 and up will be offered on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 26 and 27, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. The PennDOT-approved course may entitle attendees to a discount on auto insurance. The eight-hour classroom refresher course is designed specifically to meet the needs of older drivers by helping them sharpen driving skills; develop strategies for adjusting to age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time; and learn about the effects of medication on driving performance. Separate fees have been set for AARP members and for nonmembers.
A Harry Potter Half-Day has been set for Thursday, March 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. in GEARS Recreation Room 2, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Participants ages 6 to 13 will experience being a student at Hogwarts. They may attend some of the classes that Harry and his classmates took, learn to play quidditch, make a wand, concoct bubble potions, and try Bertie Botts and Butterbeer. Separate costs have been set for GEARS members and for nonmembers.
An American Red Cross Babysitting Training Course for people age 11 and up will take place on Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and 10, from 1 to 6 p.m. in GEARS Recreation Room 2. It will be led by Dave Rosensteel, a certified American Red Cross instructor. Participants will learn to supervise and care for infants through early teenagers. In addition to basic care for infants and children, they will learn about child behavior, age-appropriate activities, emergency protocols, and professionalism. Participants will receive a two-year certification for first aid and CPR/AED. Separate fees have been set for GEARS members and for nonmembers.
A boys' middle school volleyball program for fifth- through eighth-graders will be offered for eight weeks on Mondays and Thursdays, March 4 to April 25, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the gym at the Bear Creek School, 1459 Sheaffer Road, Elizabethtown. Players will learn passing, setting, hitting, and offensive techniques and terminology. The goal of the program is to develop players' skill level and an enthusiasm for the game. There is a fee.
