STEM Team Advances To States

For the second year in a row, Solanco's high school science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) team has won the regional tournament in the Pennsylvania Governor's STEM Competition, and it will now advance to the state tournament, to be held in May.

"Their winning project was called CLAD: Classroom Lockdown Assistance Device," Solanco teacher and STEM coach Caley Roark said. "The CLAD system is a remotely deployable device designed to secure and reinforce classroom doors without putting teachers or students in harm's way. Solanco High School Resource Officer Dilworth served as a community partner and provided expert advice in its creation."

Solanco has competed in the Pennsylvania Governor's STEM competition for two years and has won the regional contest both years. Last year's team developed a spinal protection system for athletes, and it earned a People's Choice Award at the state competition for a device most likely to lead to a medical breakthrough.
