School Board Appoints New CEO

The York Academy Regional Charter School's board of trustees met on Feb. 25 and took action to appoint Angela Sugarek to the position of chief executive officer (CEO), effective Monday, July 1. The school's current CEO, Dr. Dennis Baughman, will retire on Sunday, June 30.

Sugarek earned a Bachelor of Science in history and mathematics from Eastern New Mexico University and a Master of Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. Since 2013, she has served as a principal in the Houston Independent School District, working with International Baccalaureate (IB) programming at the Durham Elementary School and the James Hogg Middle School. She was honored as the Texas PTA Elementary Principal of the Year in 2015. She said she is enthusastic about relationship and community building, working with data, forming pathways to academic excellence and supporting her faculty.

The York Academy Regional Charter School is a nonprofit, tuition-free public charter school that educates nearly 800 diverse students in kindergarten through ninth grade via the IB curriculum. Founded in 2011, the Academy is chartered by Central York, York City and York Suburban school districts. Students from eight other districts are also represented. In August 2018, York Academy opened an Upper School in downtown York. Each year, a grade level will be added until the Academy offers classes for students in kindergarten through 12th grade at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year.
