The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley will present a program on Wednesday, March 27, titled "Trolleys" by Herb Fisher. The program will be held at 7 p.m. in the Ephrata Public Library, 550 S. Reading Road, Ephrata.
Fisher will speak about the trolley system that operated in the local area prior to World War II. A special focus of his talk will be the rerouting of the Conestoga Traction Company line running between Leola and Akron and on to Ephrata.
The electric trolley was the main mode of transportation for the local residents traveling from place to place, including going to work, visiting relatives and taking a Sunday joy ride. After WWII, buses and then automobiles and superhighways took the place of trolleys. All that remains of the trolley system are a few tracks and the rail trails.
Fisher has been collecting information and photographs on the local trolley companies for the past 12 years. He has a collection of approximately 8,500 photographs of the trolleys and trolley tracks.
Admission is free and open to the public. For details, readers may call the historical society at 717-733-1616.
