Historian and author Valgene Dunham will present "Allegany to Appomattox" on Thursday, April 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. The program, which is co-hosted by the library and the Lancaster Civil War Roundtable, is free and open to the public.
Dunham is the author of "Allegany to Appomattox," which discusses the life and letters of Pvt. William Whitlock of the 188th New York Volunteers. It describes the environment, enlistment, and political atmosphere that resulted in the Civil War from the perspective of Whitlock, a farmer who at the age of 35 left his family to serve the Union. He wrote at least 40 letters home to his wife and family. Whitlock's observations tell of exhausting marches, limited rations, and grueling combat. His letters also reveal homesickness, concern for the family's health and financial situation, and requests for news from home.
Dunham is distinguished professor emeritus in the College of Science at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. He is the author and co-author of numerous books, chapters, and journal articles.
The Lancaster Civil War Roundtable is a group dedicated to the study of, the discussion of, and in-depth learning about the Civil War. For more information, readers may email lancastercivilwarroundtable@gmail.com or visit http://www.lancastercivilewarroundtable.org.
