At least 15 local greenhouses have promised donations for the Quarryville Library's seventh auction, which will be held on Saturday, April 13, at the Hoffman Building, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The doors will open at 8 a.m. Auctioneer Darvin Rodgers has donated his services and will begin calling bids at 9 a.m. Gordon Herr has volunteered to serve as clerk. The auction is expected to run until about 1 p.m.
"We always do really well with the plants and flowers and trees," remarked auction chair Ron Althoff, a member of the library's board of directors. "We have a lot of businesses that donate items. Without the generosity of all those people, we wouldn't have an auction."
In addition to the greenhouse offerings, the auction will feature a bucket of car care supplies including a certificate for a state inspection and emissions test, passes to local attractions, an ice cream party for 30 people courtesy of a dairy farm store, certificates for mulch, a tour of the state Capitol with Rep. Bryan Cutler, furniture, jewelry, artwork, and a garden trellis. The Lancaster Barnstormers have donated four tickets and swag that will be auctioned along with passes for a pregame tour of the stadium and the opportunity to throw out the honorary first pitch at a game. Additionally, vacation stays in Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania will be up for bids.
As befitting a library event, there will be some books offered as well. Friends of the Quarryville Library member Carol Biscardi has solicited autographed volumes by Kathy Brabson, Lee Child, Kathy Reichs, Maria V. Snyder, and Laura Bradford for the auction.
Althoff noted that additional items will be accepted for the auction. The committee is looking for upscale items that will be of interest to the community.
"This is our biggest fundraiser for the year," Althoff said, adding that the library board hopes to bring in at least $13,000. "The point we stress at the auction is that you're making a donation to the library and getting something in return."
Whatever the auction generates will be used to fund the continued operation of the Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. In addition to lending books, DVDs, games, and museum passes, the library also hosts programs for people of all ages and offers free access to computers and the internet. The C.X. Carlson Cultural Room serves both as a meeting room and as a space for art exhibits.
"I never realized how much the library was used until I came on the board," Althoff commented. "A lot of people come in to use the computers and internet because they don't have it at home."
The library operates with a small paid staff, so volunteers are greatly appreciated. Volunteers also help out at the auction. "We have a lot of very good volunteers that make this possible," Althoff said.
Althoff noted that volunteers will prepare and sell food at the auction. In the morning, breakfast sandwiches, doughnuts, and coffee will be available, and later the menu will switch to soup, hot sandwiches, and cold beverages.
