National Library Week began on April 7 and will run though Saturday, April 13. This year's theme is "Libraries Build Strong Communities." Readers may visit the library anytime during the week for special surprises.
National Bookmobile Day is Friday, April 12. The Bookmobile makes the following stops in Columbia: first Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. at St. John's Herr Estate and the first Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m. at Trinity House Apartments.
Preschool Pals will be held Mondays, April 15 and 29, at 10:30 a.m.
Sahd's annual Earth Day celebration will be held on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children who visit at least 10 stations and have their passport initialed at each will receive a free Italian ice. In addition to stories, there will be games, exhibits, contests, and a tour of the facility during this free family event. The event will include a reading of "The Lorax" for children of all ages, local radio personality Lisa Landis, and food vendors. Proceeds will benefit the Columbia Food Bank.
Kris Nice will offer a three-part series for ages 16 and up called "Banking 101." The first session, "Banking Basics," will cover balancing a checking account, tips and tools to save money, and establishing credit. The session will be held in the conference room on Tuesday, April 23, at 6:30 p.m.
The Prime Timers, for people age 50 and up, will meet at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, at 1:30 p.m. Sue Tushingham will lead the program "Stress Reduction." Light refreshments will be served.
Yarn Arts Crafting for crocheters will meet on Tuesdays, April 16, 23 and 30, at 6:30 p.m. Participants will make a simple ribbed hat, and they may chose any favorite yarn, though worsted or chunky yarn is recommended. Participants will need the appropriate hook size depending on the yarn chosen. Attendees will need 250 to 300 yards of yarn. Other supplies needed include a crochet hook, scissors, and a measuring tape. The instructors will be Kasey Patterson and Randi Clark, assisted by Cathy Rideaux.
The plarn project, sleeping mats for the homeless, will continue with Cathy Rideaux on Thursdays, April 11, 18 and 25, at 1 p.m. Participants will prepare plastic grocery bags to make plarn (plastic yarn) for crocheting. All are welcome to help fold and cut bags. No crocheting experience is necessary.
Knitting classes will be held on Thursdays, April 11 and 25, at 7 p.m. Anyone is welcome. No experience is needed for any of the classes. The instructor will be Gaile Morrison.
A puzzle swap is located in the Community Room. Readers may feel free to both donate and take puzzles for any age, make sure puzzles are in good condition with no missing pieces.
The Library System of Lancaster County's annual meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 17, at 7 p.m. This year's Volunteer of the Year from Columbia is Jeanette Sherk. Receiving the award on Jeanette's behalf will be her husband Steve Sherk and her children.
Family Film Night will be held on Wednesday, April 24, at 6 p.m. "Mary Poppins Returns" will be shown.
The Summer Reading Program will begin on Saturday, June 1. This year's theme is "A Universe of Stories" - timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing. Children from birth through age 19 may pick up reading logs beginning on June 1. Programs will kick off on Tuesday, June 11, with a kickoff concert by "Phredd" McNaughton. Refreshments and prize drawings will be available on the terrace. Reading logs may also be picked up at this program as well. The scavenger hunt of space-related posters at Columbia business establishments will return this summer.
New performers this summer include Neill Hartley portraying Charles Lindbergh, Family Stages, and the North Museum "Mission to the Moon." Returning presenters will include Ryan Bridge and the bugs, Jesse Rothacker and the reptiles, character juggler Chris Ivey, magician John Andrews, illusion and mind reading with Ran'D Shine, singer Mark DeRose, singer Maggie Spike, singer Matt Dodd, the Columbia Borough Police, the Columbia Borough Fire Company, Columbia QRS, Al and Patti Means and their search-and-rescue bloodhounds, Fred Nell with Sadie and Piper, Lancaster County Parks, CHI Children's Health with Hank the Health Hero puppet, and tour of Sahd's Metal Recycling. The last day to turn in completed logs will be Saturday, Aug. 10.
Through the Food for Fines program, the library collected 201 items.
