"York's Hidden Figures" Slated

Apr 25, 2019 - 7:00 pm

York College, 441 Country Club Road, York, will conclude its "York's Hidden Figures" series on Thursday, April 25, with an event to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Golden Venture, a ship smuggling Chinese immigrants that ran aground near New York City in 1993. More than 150 men were sent to York County Prison, where many were detained for up to four years. A group of attorneys and others advocated for the men, saving many from being sent back to face harsh punishment by Chinese authorities.

The event will begin with the screening of a documentary about this historic event. The documentary will be followed by a panel discussion with several from that group, including attorney Jeff Lobach, Judge Craig Trebilcock, Mary Studzinski, and Joan Maruskin. The event will be held in Weinstock Lecture Hall.

This event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so ticket reservations are recommended. For reservations, readers may visit http://www.eventbrite.com and search for "The Story of the Golden Venture." "York's Hidden Figures" is a yearlong celebration of the contributions of communities of color and other underserved populations.
