May is Mental Health Month, and this initiative was started 70 years ago by Mental Health America of Lancaster County's national organization, Mental Health America (MHA), to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of good mental health for everyone. According to the organization, a healthy lifestyle can help to prevent the onset or worsening of mental health conditions, as well as chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. It can also help people recover from these conditions. Finding a balance between work and play, the ups and downs of life, and physical health and mental health can help someone on the path toward recovery.
MHA Lancaster has both peer and family and child advocates to guide individuals, along with resources and educational speakers for events, workplaces or classrooms. For help finding support and mind-body lifestyle ideas or for help navigating local behavioral health services, readers may visit http://www.mhalancaster.org or contact 717-397-7461 or mha@mhalancaster.org.
