York County Plans Senior Games

Jun 17, 2019 -

More than 500 seniors from across York County are expected to come together for the 18th annual York County Senior Games. The York County Senior Games, which began in 2002 as a one-day program featuring about 20 events, now take place over five days and offer participants the chance to test their skills in 48 events.

The goal is to promote healthy lifestyles and fitness for York County men and women who are age 50 and older as of Tuesday, Dec. 31. Registration is open for this year's games, which will take place from Monday, June 17, through Friday, June 21.

Events will include annual favorites such as cornhole, horseshoes, shuffleboard, throws, basketball hot shots, pinochle, Wii bowling, and more. The triathlon will return for the seventh year. Pickleball will be a new event for 2019.

There is a registration fee for an unlimited number of events. All registrations must be postmarked by the Friday, June 7, registration deadline. Registrations should be received as early as possible because of limited openings in some events. The registration fee is nonrefundable. For some events, there are additional fees, payable at the event site.

Volunteers are also sought to help support the games. All volunteers must be at least age 14, and groups, such as community groups, youth groups, Scout troops, organizations, and businesses, may sign up. Volunteer opportunities include assisting with registration, keeping score, providing support for the event coordinators, picking up and delivering supplies and equipment, helping at events, and restocking supplies. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, readers may contact 717-771-9001 or aging@yorkcountypa.gov.

The Senior Games are organized by the York County Area Agency on Aging (YCAAA) in conjunction with the Senior Games Planning Committee, which is made up of community and business volunteers. Expenses for the games are entirely underwritten by corporate sponsors, private donations, and participant entry fees.

Event coordinators reserve the right to consolidate age divisions for competition based on insufficient entries and can modify event rules and formats or cancel events. Medals will be awarded within each age group. Some events are open to men and women separately. Age groups are 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 60 to 64, 65 to 69, 70 to 74, 75 to 79, 80 to 84, 85 to 89, and 90 and up. Event coordinators may consolidate age divisions for competition based on insufficient entries and may modify event rules and formats or cancel events.

Registration booklets are available at many locations throughout the county or can be obtained by contacting the York County Area Agency on Aging at 717-771-9001 or 800-632-9073. Registration booklets and forms are also available at http://www.ycaaa.org on the Forms and Documents page.
