Volunteers Needed For Summer Lunch Program

In its pursuit to combat childhood hunger locally, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services will kick off its Summer Lunch Program in June. Funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Summer Lunch Program provides nutritious meals to children three days a week over summer vacation in areas deemed to have a large concentration of low-income housing.

CVCCS is the local program administrator and is in charge of cooking, delivering, and serving the meals at three locations in the Conestoga Valley School District - Flory Park, Country Club Apartments, and Ebenezer E.C. Church in Brownstown. Meals will be provided on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Monday, June 10, through Thursday, Aug. 15.

While the program is geared toward children from low-income families, all children and youths up to age 18 are welcome to participate. Registration is not required, and no personal data is taken. In addition to serving meals to the children, site volunteers also oversee activities such as crafts and games to encourage healthy socialization.

Various volunteer positions are available. Volunteers may assist as kitchen helpers, baggers, site managers, or staff members who serve and interact with the children. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, readers may contact Deb at 717-208-3711, ext. 103.
