Warwick Softball Claims Section One Crown

Three up, three down. That was the storyline for Warwick softball last week as the lady Warriors pretty much sealed their Section One title with wins over McCaskey, Penn Manor, and Hempfield.

In Monday's contest with McCaskey at home under the lights, Marissa Treibley held the Red Tornado to only three hits in a 10-0 shutout that lasted five innings. Treibley also drove in two runs in a 2-3 effort at the plate while Danielle Jones went 4-4 with four RBIs and only needed a home run to complete the cycle in her offensive outburst.

Warwick tallied 14 hits in all and spread its 10 runs out over the course of the game, scoring once in each of the opening innings, twice in both the third and fifth, and four times in the fourth. Catie Brubaker (3-4, RBI), Evie Clugston (1-3, 3RBI), Katelyn Minney (2-4), Peyton Heisey (1-2), and Emily Beale (1-4) added to the Warwick win.

In a battle between first and second place teams, the lady Warriors traveled to Penn Manor last Tuesday where they handled the Comets 6-1. Minney got the start, pitching the complete game with seven hits and an earned run while striking out seven and walking one.

Penn Manor remained scoreless until the fifth before finally crossing the plate for its lone run of the game, but by then the damage had already been done as Warwick had amassed a six-run lead.

Warwick led 2-0 after the second on a double by Brubaker (1-4, RBI) in the first that scored Beale (2-4, RBI), and then Beale's single in the second that brought home Kenzie Stewart (1-2). Clugston (1-3, 2RBI) was thrown out at the plate on the same play, ending the inning.

In the fourth, Treibley (1-4) and Heisey (1-3) both singled and Stewart was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with no outs. A fielder's choice by Clugston brought Heisey home after Treibley was thrown out at the plate and was followed by a single from Amanda Forsythe (1-2, 2RBI) that scored Stewart to make it 4-0.

Warwick scored its final two runs of the game in the next inning beginning with a two-out, bases loaded single by Clugston and ending with Forsythe getting hit by a pitch before Beale grounded out to end the inning at 6-0.

Wednesday's game at Hempfield turned into a nail biter as both Minney and Hempfield's pitcher Gabi Turner battled it out on the rubber. However, it was the Black Knights that blinked twice as Warwick gutted out a 2-0 victory.

Clugston (1-3) was the first to figure out Turner, but it didn't come until the third inning when she dropped a short single just behind third and then moved to third on a double by Forsythe (2-3). Beale (1-4, RBI) then brought her home on Warwick's third straight hit of the game when she dropped her own soft single on the line behind first base for the 1-0 lead. Warwick had more opportunities to score in the inning, but left the bases loaded when Brubaker and Jones were both retired by Turner for the final outs.

Warwick's final run of the game came on a line drive double by Minney (1-2, RBI) in the fifth that scored Forsythe from second after she opened the inning with a two-bagger of her own. Minney, again, went the full seven innings only surrendering two hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

VOLLEYBALL

With high stakes on the line-a possible Section One title-and in front of a packed house at Hempfield High School last Tuesday, the Warriors faced off with second place Hempfield which was looking to avenge its only loss of the season at the hands of Warwick. In a tense battle that was a lot closer than the 3-0 score indicated, the Knights got their revenge and created a tie at the top of the Section.

With scores of 25-22, 25-23, and 26-24 the Warriors (9-1, 12-1) and Knights (9-1, 11-1) gave everything they had with Hempfield playing just a little better in the re-match. Warwick trailed much of the first game, eventually catching the Knights who would pull away again numerous times, each time getting tied again by the Warriors, until finishing out to go up 1-0.

Falling behind quickly in the second, Warwick seemed to have no answer but then began putting a streak together that brought them to within one, 20-19. Warwick then won four of the next seven points to tie the game at 23-23 before conceding the final two and falling behind 2-0.

Warwick led midway through the third and found themselves tied at 24-24 but the Knights went up by one and then scored the match winner on a service ace by Owen Hanzelman that was left alone by Warwick but landed just inside the line.

Foster Lobb and Chad Meeder led Warwick with 11 kills apiece while Meeder also recorded two aces and 17 digs and Lobb blocked two. Connor Baer racked up 34 assists as well.

The Warriors shook off that loss and took it out on Manheim Township on Thursday with a 3-0 shutout of the Streaks. Adam Kurtz tallied 10 kills and two aces, Noah Miller had nine kills, and Baer served up two aces in the 25-6, 25-11, 25-12 victory.

Warwick's girls clinched their Section One title last Monday with a commanding 105-45 performance over Penn Manor while the boys also came away with a victory in a much closer 85-64 triumph.

In a dominant showing over the Comets, the lady Warriors claimed every event but the shot, discus, and javelin with two athletes doubling down on wins. Emily Skidmore and Julliette Delmotte earned two victories apiece as Skidmore shone in the hurdles, winning the 100 in 16.6 and the 300 in 48.2 while Delmotte excelled in both the long jump (15-2.25) and the triple jump (37-0.75).

Leah Graybill, Jessica, Meghan Quinn, and Lily Palacio-Lewis took the 400 in a time of 47.9, while in the 1600 it was Kate Dickow, Emily, Caitlyn Wagner, and Graybill coming out on top with a 4:11.8.

LACROSSE

Warwick's boys lost their final game of the season to Manheim Township on Thursday by a score of 12-6 and now have to play a waiting game to see if they will qualify for the District Three 3A Championship. Twelve teams from the District get in to the tournament and the Warriors were ranked 11th at the end of last week, however, not all teams from the District have finished their seasons.

With a slight 30-28 advantage in shots, it was the Streaks that made the most of theirs as Warwick scored three times in the first half to go down 8-3 and then were outscored in the second 4-3. Justin Gerhart led the Warriors with two goals, while Conor Adams, Carter Davis, Joshua Swift, and Cayden Rihn each added one.

The girls finished out their season on a losing note as well, dropping the final three last week. They went down 18-4 to Lampeter-Strasburg, 19-4 opposite Cocalico, and 20-9 against Wyomissing.

Warwick's Zoe Stauffer had a busy day in net against L-S, stopping 19, as the Pioneers outshot the Warriors 37-8 and lead 10-3 by halftime. Tanner Armstrong and Zoe Gooding each scored two apiece for Warwick.

Cocalico's game went much the same way as the Eagles outshot Warwick 35-9 and Stauffer turned away 16. Sheppard scored two, while Armstrong and Lindsay Quinn added one apiece.

Versus Wyomissing on Saturday six players accounted for the nine goals with Emma Leister putting up three, Armstrong and Quinn adding two apiece, and Sheppard and Amanda Beck tallying one each.

BASEBALL

Warwick dropped two out of three games last week as it prepares for the end of the season and the beginning of playoffs. The Warriors lost to McCaskey 2-1 last Monday before coming back to win 8-5 against Penn Manor on Tuesday and the finishing out with a 5-3 loss to Hempfield on Wednesday.

Evan Rohrbach got the start against the Red Tornado, but it was Colin Brubaker that took the loss as he came on in relief in the fifth and surrendered two runs on one hit. Warwick came to bat in the sixth, trailing by two, and got one back on a single by John Seibert (1-3, RBI) that scored Brendan Martin (1-3) from second, but left two runners on base in the seventh to end the game.

The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Penn Manor and then added two more in the second and three in the fourth for an 8-0 lead before the Comets rallied late for six runs over the final three innings. Colby Martin went 3-4 with three RBIs while Ethan Heller (1-2, 2RBI), and Martin (1-2, RBI), helped add to the victory. Dagen Young picked up the win.

Hempfield erased a 1-0 Warwick lead by scoring five unanswered runs before the Warriors scored twice more in the failed come-back bid. Jackson Davies picked up the loss, going four innings and surrendering three runs before Brubaker came on in the fifth and Martin finished things out in the seventh. Martin (2-3, RBI), and Seibert (2-4, RBI) paced Warwick.
