More than 220 participants signed up to take part in the 2018 Lititz recCenter adult triathlon. This year, before athletes dive into the water on Sunday, Aug. 4, Simon Ababou, fitness director with the rec center, wants them to be well prepared. So, Ababou has teamed up with fellowship-trained sports medicine doctor John Murphy and experienced triathlete Sara Grosh to hold a free seminar on how to train safely and more fully for the event.
The seminar, dubbed Triathlon Training, Tips, and Transitions: Getting Started Safely, will be held at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, on Monday, June 10, at 6 p.m. Murphy, a doctor with UPMC Pinnacle, which is a sponsor of the triathlon, will focus on training techniques with the goal of minimizing injury risk and maximizing the rewards of training effectively and safely.
The rec center's triathlon requires participants to swim 300 meters in the outdoor pool, bike 15.8 miles through the farmland surrounding Lititz, and run 3.1 miles. "Dr. Murphy thought it would be great to have a clinic to speak about triathlon training and tips and how to start safely," explained Ababou. "We want to send a message that you still have time to prepare and train for the event."
Ababou noted that Murphy will include information to help participants move smoothly from one activity to the next. "People need to know what you need to have to swim, bike, and run," he said, noting that helmets are required and that participants should consider that they may need goggles, a swim cap, bike shoes, sunglasses, water bottles, sunscreen, and more. Knowing how to handle the transitions from swimming to biking to running is important too. Ababou noted that he believes participants who drink enough water when cycling will be safer when they run.
Immediately following the seminar, those who attended will have the opportunity to join the Lititz recCenter Triathlon Training and Running Club, which Ababou oversees.
Triathlon activities range from sprint distances to Ironman events. Novice triathletes may want to start with a sprint-type event like the Lititz recCenter adult triathlon. Proper training, commitment, and nutrition are essential to accomplishing a sprint before moving on to more challenging triathlons.
Organizers of the triathlon encourage participants to sign up in teams, so that families and friends can enjoy the event together. The minimum age to take part in the event is 16, but Ababou said that younger people may complete the swimming portion for a parent. The rec center has written to Lancaster County swim teams to apprise them of this opportunity. Teams made up of employees from local businesses or fellow church members are encouraged to participate as well. Ababou noted that employers are welcome to sponsor employees in the event.
