YCLC Celebrates Reading

York County Literacy Council (YCLC) recently presented two BMX bikes to the winning students of the Buck A Book Reading Program bike drawing. Students from school districts around York County entered the bike drawing when they participated in the Buck A Book Reading Program.

The winning students, Olivia King of West Manheim Elementary School and Zayden Martin of New Salem Elementary School, were announced at the Buck A Book Reading Program Recognition Event during two York Revolution games. The top overall school was Ore Valley Elementary School of Dallastown Area School District, and the top per-capita school was Leaders Heights Elementary School of Dallastown Area School District. Approximately 1,600 students participated and read 10,500 books. Seventeen schools also received library books.

The reading program aims to encourage students to read and become involved in community service by providing prizes to the students for different levels of fundraising and reading. Through the program, students read books and raise money for literacy causes in York County. Participating students are also made aware of the difficulties that illiterate adults face on a daily basis.

YCLC provides free and confidential literacy services to adults in York County. Services include basic reading classes, classes for the high school equivalency test, pre-nurse aide classes, English as a Second Language classes, and citizenship classes.
