On May 17, Our Mother of Perpetual Help School (OMPH) held a graduation for the fifth-grade class, which completed the 10-week D.A.R.E. Program.
D.A.R.E., which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, aims to give students the skills they need to avoid involvement with drugs. Using question-and-answer sessions, group discussions, role-plays, and workbook exercises, students learn how to respond when a friend pressures them to try alcohol or drugs. They learn to recognize forms of influence from peers, parents, and the media.
All students complete a culminating project to share their learning. Three students were awarded prizes for their D.A.R.E. projects: Naomi Dresch, first place; Michael Sheaffer, second place; and Andrew Hoffmann, third place.
Officer Brian Dell Isola of the Ephrata Borough Police Department gives his time to teach the class each year, and OMPH fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Sheckler has coordinated the program.
