The Manheim Township Educational Foundation (MTEF) has announced the winners of the 2019 James L. and Jane Louise Wertz Memorial Award. Awards are presented to two Manheim Township High School freshmen who have shown outstanding improvement in academics, social skills, volunteerism, and athletics. Selected by freshman class educators, the 2019 winners were Faith Onchuru and Davin Barton. On May 17, MTEF executive director Jenny Germann presented Faith and Davin with a certificate and a check in recognition of their accomplishments.
Davin is the son of Katina and Zack Barton. The teacher who nominated him wanted to recognize him for his work ethic, respect, and kindness. Faith is the daughter of Ruth Nyairo and Cosmas Marisi. Her nominating teacher said Faith serves as an example of how success can be achieved through hard work and consistent study habits. Both students mentioned they will strive to maintain their academic standards as they continue their high school career.
The award is given in memory of James L. Wertz and his sister, Jane Louise Wertz. James graduated from Manheim Township in 1982 and passed away in 2006. Jane graduated in 1985 and passed away in July 2014. Their parents established the award through the MTEF to honor their belief that success is found through hard work. Understanding that the transition from middle school to high school can be difficult for students, the Wertzes chose to honor those who have demonstrated significant positive growth during their freshman year.
The MTEF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization formed in 1993 to strengthen, enhance, and enrich the educational experience of Manheim Township students past and present. To learn more, readers may visit http://www.MTEF.net.
