School is out for Elizabethtown Area School District, but six members of Elizabethtown Area High School's Mind and Body class recently had one last task to complete before beginning their summer. On June 4, the students, along with teacher Shane Kargo, gathered at the Community Place on Washington to donate more than $4,319 to Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC).
Earlier this spring, the class hosted a community-wide 5K run on the high school campus. The proceeds from the race were earmarked for EACTC. As part of the run, the students planned the event, publicized it to the community, laid out the course, and organized race-day activities.
EACTC will use the funds to support the following programs that directly impact the school district.
The Positive Community Norms initiative addresses community issues by focusing on positive, healthy norms and behaviors and seeking to reduce misperceptions related to the use of alcohol and drugs by today's youths.
The Club Ophelia Program is offered to fifth-grade girls and middle school girls in the Elizabethtown Area School District to help them develop healthy relationship skills and learn successful ways of handling relational aggression.
The Do The Right Thing Program honors children and youths in kindergarten through grade 12 in the Elizabethtown community who do positive things that make a difference.
The Suite 360 Student and Parent Wellness Platform helps students in seventh through 12th grades and their parents navigate a range of issues related to online bullying, character development, social competence, tactical parent support, emotional wellness, restorative justice, and other areas.
The Positive Experience Partnership is offered to students at Bear Creek School and led by experienced college students and Elizabethtown Area School District counseling staff. The program offers activities designed to help students improve friendship skills and learn positive ways to express and understand emotions.
Participating in the check donation were seniors Megan Conley and Katie Kimbark; junior Kristen McEvoy; and sophomores Jacqueline Bruno, Macy Seaman, and Alex Williams. Receiving the check on behalf of EACTC were Gail Viscome, executive director of EACTC, and Amy McEvoy, program coordinator for EACTC.
