The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, most of which will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event.
A free junior tennis clinic for children and youths ages 6 to 13 will be held on Saturday, June 29, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the park tennis courts, 585 Golf Road, Lancaster. Jeff Kitsock, certified by the United States Professional Tennis Registry, will provide instruction. Volunteers from Tennis Central will assist. The clinic is recommended for beginner-level players. Participants should bring a racket if they have one, and a small supply of rackets will be available to borrow. Prizes for each participant will be provided by Tennis Central.
Marine Mammal Mania for people age 8 and up will take place on June 29 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Naturalist Emily Snyder will lead this program about the marine mammals that inhabit the planet. Participants will learn all about the habitat, behavior and communication of these creatures and play a game to simulate whale communication. The program will finish with a marine mammal craft that participants may take home.
Paddle in the Park for people age 4 and up will be offered on Sunday, June 30, from 11 a.m. to noon, 12:15 to 1:15 p.m., and 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 877 Rockford Road, Lancaster. Naturalists Lisa Sanchez and Brandon Pentz will lead participants in trying their hand at paddling a canoe. Sign-up is available for one or more of the hourly time slots. Attendees will learn basic paddling strokes, techniques, and safety instructions on land and then board canoes to practice skills in an area of flat water on the Conestoga River.
Beautiful Butterfly will be held on June 30 from 1 to 2 p.m. The program is open to people of all ages, though it is geared toward children ages 4 to 8. With naturalist Vanessa Stager, participants will create butterfly crafts in the classroom and then head outside to the fields to search for butterflies and enjoy other butterfly activities. Attendees will learn about the beauty of butterflies and their unique features. Each child will receive a butterfly net to take home.
A Firefly New Moon Walk for people of all ages will be offered on Tuesday, July 2, from 9 to 10 p.m. In the dark under the new moon, Sanchez will lead a walk, relying on the fireflies to show the way. Participants will be able to catch and release fireflies.
