Helena Martin, agriscience educator at Octorara High School, recently attended an eight-day professional development institute at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. She is now trained to teach the Principles of Agricultural Science - Animal Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) course in her program.
CASE is an instructional system for agriculture programs in the United States that focuses on intense teacher professional development; inquiry-based, student-focused lessons; assessment; and certification. CASE is designed to equip teachers to elevate student experiences in the agriculture classroom and to prepare students for success in college and careers emphasizing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). CASE is an initiative of The National Council for Agricultural Education and is managed by the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE).
During the CASE Institute, Martin spent 72 hours working through nearly every lesson in the yearlong curriculum and learning how to deliver lessons in an inquiry-based way that will shift focus in the classroom from teacher-led to student-directed learning.
