The Lititz Garden Club presented its annual garden award to an outstanding garden in the Warwick School District for its curb appeal and beauty. This year, the award was given to Jean Gensemer of 404 Woodcrest Ave., Lititz.
As Gensemer's home is located at the corner of Woodcrest Avenue and Second Avenue, her eye-catching gardens along the fence at the front and side of the property boast curb appeal. Her gardens that are visible to passersby continue along the side and back of the garage, which is located behind the home.
Gensemer notes that she has more than 1,000 plants, including perennials, shrubs, annuals, and herbs, and she cultivates both sun and shade gardens throughout her property. She has 12 varieties of hydrangeas, which she likes to layer in her garden. She also collects seeds to start new plants in her gardens. Preferring not to rely on mulch, Gensemer uses compost and regularly weeds with the help of her sister, Margie Ferguson, who resides with her. Community members are welcome to admire Gensemer's gardens from the sidewalk, but they are asked not to tour the backyard.
After placing the award sign in Gensemer's front garden, the award committee presented her with 50 Lititz Dollars. The club has presented the award annually since 2006.
The Lititz Garden Club seeks to gather like-minded people in a social atmosphere to learn and share information about gardening. Projects include gardening programs and speakers, garden tours and trips, and civic projects. The club meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, with some exceptions.
