"Butterfly Buzz" Program Slated

Aug 17, 2019 -

The Penn State Master Gardeners of York County will host Butterfly Buzz on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the historic Hanover Junction Station on the York Heritage Rail Trail, 2433 Seven Valleys Road (Pennsylvania Route 616), Seven Valleys, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. Butterfly Buzz is a family educational event that will celebrate the pollinating partnership between butterflies and native plant gardens. The event is free and open to the public.

Butterfly Buzz will feature an exhibit of live butterflies and larvae (caterpillars), a tour of the Hanover Junction Station garden, and the tagging and release of butterflies. Children will be invited to participate in a garden-art activity with the option to receive temporary insect tattoos. A free native pollinator plant will be given to the first 40 attendees, with one plant per family, and native plant information will be available to help people plan their garden. The Master Gardeners will also provide information about the status of the spotted lanternfly, which has been recently spotted in York County.

Visitors may enjoy light refreshments, walk on the Rail Trail, and visit the Hanover Junction Station Museum, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
