The Summer Reading Program at the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana is filled with interactive programs for young patrons, as well as fun activities and reading opportunities.
This year's theme, "A Universe of Stories," is intended to open minds to a very wide range of stories and presentations. On July 18, special guest Liz Bleacher came to the library with the STEM Mobile from Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania to offer the youths a hands-on science experience.
Bleacher's program was a course on the use of maps and a compass. "We're going to have some activities we're going to do hands-on, and they're going to make their own compass to take home," Bleacher said. "We're going to answer the question, 'Why do you still have to know how to read maps, even in this age of GPS?'"
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. Bleacher visits Scout troops and libraries in the nine southern counties of the 30 mid-state counties covered by Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania.
"We have 12 different programs that are all STEM-focused," Bleacher said. Programs are designed for students in kindergarten through grade 12 and feature topics such as robotics, electronics, engineering and coding. For the program at Moores Memorial Library, the children used magnets to create a working compass to take home with them and they learned to navigate using a traditional map and compass reading skills.
The Summer Reading Program at the library will run through Saturday, Aug. 10, for youths up to age 19. Participants may read at their own pace to complete reading logs. Free prizes are provided by local businesses for those who complete the requirements.
"It's going well. We have a lot of kids going through and a lot of attendance for the programs," said library director Trish Vandenbosch.
