Community Calendar

The Community Calendar is a weekly feature of the Community Courier.

Local clubs, civic organizations, nonprofit agencies, schools, etc., that would like to have events or meeting date information published, should contact the Community Courier in writing at least two weeks before the event. No items will be accepted over the phone.

Stories In The Shade

Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook, will offer Stories in the Shade with Miss Jennifer on Wednesdays, July 31 and Aug. 7, at 10 a.m. Children are invited to join Miss Jennifer for stories, songs and crafts outside when weather permits. On Aug. 7, the Story Time Summer Party will be held.

Attendees should bring a blanket for sitting in the grass. Stories in the Shade is designed for preschoolers, but people of all ages are welcome to attend. For details, call 610-273-3303.

Library Programs

The Village Library of Morgantown will present special programs on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. in July and August as part of its Summer Reading Club, themed "A Universe of Stories."

The programs will include "The Rainforest" on July 31, "The Pond" on Aug. 7 and "Your Own Back Yard" on Aug. 14. The program finale on Aug. 21 will feature the Science Tellers.

Breakfast With The Bible

Alan Lindsay, senior warden of the Church of Saint Mary at Calvary in Elverson, will host Breakfast With the Bible on Friday, Aug. 2, at 8:30 a.m. at the Morgantown Coffee House, 4997 N. Twin Valley Road, Elverson.

Attendees should bring a Bible and may enjoy coffee, tea, and/or breakfast. The community is invited to participate.

Chicken Barbecue

St. Peter United Church of Christ, Route 23, Knauertown, will host a chicken barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. It will consist of a half-chicken, potato, vegetable, roll and butter, and dessert.

Tickets can be purchased at the church's community dinners and flea markets leading up to this event, from any church member, or by calling 610-469-6960.

Hike

The Berks Strollers will hike at Maack Farm/Wineberry Estates in East Coventry Township on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 9 a.m. The GPS address is 175 Maack Road, Pottstown. For more information, call Linda, the hike leader, at 610-913-0284 or at 610-451-9935 on the day of the event.

National Night Out

Robeson Lutheran Church, 3520 Plow Road, Mohnton, will host Plowville's National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will be free to people of all ages.

There will be food, games, entertainment and handouts from local businesses and organizations. First responders will be present that evening and will provide demonstrations. The goal of the evening is to enhance the relationship between neighbors and first responders while bringing back a true sense of community.

TOPS Meeting

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), a nonprofit weight loss support group, will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 8:45 to 10 a.m. at The Torch Community Center, located in the Clock Tower Plaza in Morgantown. Senior Group

Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown, will be the site of a meeting of Senior Connections on the second Thursday of each month.

All local residents age 60 and older are invited to attend. Each event will begin with a free homemade meal at noon followed by a program from 1 to 2 p.m. On Aug. 8, children and youths will present a talent show that will include singing and drama.

Fundraiser

St. Mary of Providence Center, 227 Isabella Road, Elverson, will hold a pool fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will feature historic mansion tours, an outdoor barbecue, swimming and a craft sale.

Proceeds will be used to raise funds for the to re-roofing the pool and repair the air exchange units.

StarFest

The community is invited to view the night sky through powerful telescopes owned by members of the ChesMont Astronomical Society during StarFest 2019, to be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, located at 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson, off Route 345 and Hopewell Road.

The annual event will also feature educational activities for children, along with guest speakers and door prizes. Star gazing will begin at 9:30 p.m. Admission and parking will be free, but donations will be accepted. Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. A food vendor will be on-site.

The rain/cloud date for StarFest 2018 is Sunday, Aug. 25. For more information, visit http://www.chesmontastro.org. Cancellation information will be posted on the website.

Clothing Closet

The Anchored by Grace mobile clothing closet, which offers free clothing and accessories to people in need, will be stationed in the parking lot at the Twin Valley Food Pantry, located at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

In addition, Anchored by Grace will present a back-to-school event at Morgantown Community Church, 4221 Main St., Elverson, on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each visiting student will receive a book bag with school supplies and toiletries. The students must be present to receive a book bag.
