Parks Department Sets Programs

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer two programs to the community. Registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. To register, readers may call 717-295-2055 or visit http://www.lancastercountyparks.org.

People of all ages are invited to attend Beauty of Space Through the Eye of the Hubble Space Telescope on Friday, Aug. 23, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The event will take place on the lawn of Shuts Environmental Library, 3 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Naturalist Ann Strauss will project and interpret photographs taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. Attendees may bring lawn chairs and blankets. There is a fee per person.

Nature Journal-Making and Leave No Trace Hiking will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to noon. at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. This program is geared for upper elementary and intermediate-level children age 8 and up. Naturalist Ivana Shandor will show participants how to make a nature journal using everyday items. Participants will then take a hike emphasizing the principles of "Leave No Trace." Approximately 15 minutes will be allotted along the hike for participants to choose their focus - such as flora, fauna, or geology - and log their first observations and sketches into their journals. Participants may opt to share journal entries. Participants will leave with a handout challenging them to incorporate nature journaling into their weekly activities. There is a fee per child, with a lower fee per adult.
