Sep 21, 2019 - 7:30 am

The American Heart Association, a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health invite workplaces, friends and families from across Lancaster County to join the 2019 Lancaster Heart Walk on Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Barnstormers' home stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Festivities will begin at 7:30 a.m., and the walk will step off at 9 a.m.

Activities at this year's Heart Walk will include free CPR demonstrations, blood pressure screenings and children's activities. Lancaster General Health will welcome walkers at the registration table and hand out healthy snacks along the walk route.

The event will culminate with a 1-mile or 3-mile walk around the Franklin & Marshall University campus. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are permitted to join their humans in the concourse of the Barnstormers' home stadium and during the walk, but dogs are not permitted on the baseball field.

The Heart Walk is part of the American Heart Association's Healthy For Good movement to encourage sustainable healthy lifestyle changes. Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health has served as a presenting sponsor of the movement since 2013. In addition to supporting the Heart Walk, LG Health has supported the planting of American Heart Association Teaching Gardens at five Lancaster elementary schools, the establishment of a labeled walking path around Buchanan Park, the installation of three bicycle repair stations in the city of Lancaster and one along WERT trail in Warwick Township and the installation of a bicycle rack at King Elementary. This year, LG Health and the American Heart Association will collaborate on the installation of a drinking water filtration station at Lampeter-Strasburg High School to provide students with access to clean drinking water as an alternative to sugary beverages.

The Lancaster Heart Walk is chaired by Bernadette Taylor, senior executive vice president and chief human resources officer for Fulton Financial Corporation. The Lancaster Heart Walk is presented by LG Health and Fulton Bank, with additional support from the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, UPMC Pinnacle and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

Organizers have set a goal to raise $325,000 from the Heart Walk to support the American Heart Association. Walkers who raise a minimum of $100 will receive a Heart Walk T-shirt and the opportunity to earn additional prizes. Dollars raised will support the American Heart Association's mission to be a force for a world of longer, healthier lives through investments in heart disease and stroke research, health care quality improvement, advocacy, prevention and education.
