YWCA Lancaster has announced the six honorees for the Women of Achievement Awards Luncheon, and Dr. Tererai Trent will be the keynote speaker. On Aug. 26, Trent was honored as one of the 10 most inspirational women in the world with a life-size statue at the Statues for Equality event in New York City.
Trent grew up in a cattle-herding family in rural Zimbabwe. She did not have the opportunity to go to school, so she taught herself to read and write from her brother's schoolbooks. Despite being married young and having three children by the time she was 18, she never lost sight of her dreams of going to America for higher education. She eventually earned multiple degrees, and she has a global platform with world leaders and international businesses and audiences where she advocates for universal access to quality education.
Trent has published two books, won the 2018 NAACP Award for Outstanding Literary Work, and improved education for more than 6,000 children.
The official biographies of Trent and the six honorees are available at http://www.ywcalancaster.org/womenofachievement.
