GEARS will offer an Iddy Biddy Soccer program for children ages 3 to 5 on Saturdays, Sept. 7 to Oct. 12, from 9 to 10 a.m. (Class A) and 10 to 11 a.m. (Class B) at High School Field 2, 800 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Coaches will teach basic soccer skills such as dribbling, passing, and trapping, with emphasis also placed on social skills. The fee includes a T-shirt. Shin guards are recommended, and cleats are optional.
Pond Fishing for Beginners will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. Participants will be provided with a rod and reel, tackle, and bait and will learn how to use the equipment. The class will be held pondside so participants can test out their new skills. The class is open to people of all ages, but those age 16 and over must have a Pennsylvania fishing license. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 15.
Medicare Madness: Intro to Medicare, led by human resource benefits specialist Jonathan Ebersole for individuals who are about to turn age 65, will be offered on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. in GEARS Recreation Room 2, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The basics of Medicare will be explained, including how and when to sign up for Medicare, what is covered by the different parts of Medicare (A, B, C, and D), and what the difference is between a Medicare Supplemental (Medigap) plan and a Medicare Advantage plan, along with how to find a plan that best fits one's needs. Several rounds of Medicare Bingo will be played.
Two canine classes will be taught by Deb Haldeman on Thursdays, Sept. 19 to Oct. 10, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Canine Fast Track Basic Obedience, set for 7 to 8 p.m., will highlight basic obedience, problem solving, and tricks. Advanced Canine Fast Track, set for 8 to 9 p.m., will concentrate on skills learned in the beginner class and work on advancing toward obtaining Canine Good Citizen (CGC) recognition as determined by the American Kennel Club. The CGC test will be offered to teams that are ready.
Materials needed for both canine classes are a six-foot fabric or leather leash, dog treats, and proof of vaccinations, and it is recommended that the dog receives the kennel cough vaccine. Handlers must be age 16 or older.
A trip to see "The Phanton of the Opera" on Broadway will be offered on Thursday, Dec. 5, with a 6:15 a.m. departure from the MoviE-town parking lot, 700 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown. The show is known as Broadway's longest-running hit.
