Corey Markle and Debra Gable received awards on Aug. 17 at Special Olympics Pennsylvania's annual Leadership Conference. Matt Aaron, CEO of Pennsylvania Special Olympics, presented the Hall of Fame Award to Markle and the Coach of the Year Award to Gable.
Markle has been part of York County Special Olympics for more than 30 years, participating and training in more than 10 sports. He competed at state events for more than 15 years, including Fall Festival held at Villanova University, Winter Games held at Hidden Valley Resort, and Summer Games held at State College. He also was part of the 2014 soccer team that competed at Nationals held in New Jersey and helped bring home the gold medal to York County. In addition, he was one of the top fundraisers for York County when he participated in the Polar Plunge held in February at Wrightsville along the Susquehanna River. The 2019 Hall of Fame Award is this highest award given to a Special Olympics athlete.
Gable has been the York County Special Olympics tennis coach for seven years. During that time, she initiated the Fit 5 program and encouraged her athletes to be conscious of the importance of hydration, exercise, and nutrition. She also volunteered with the Polar Plunge annual fundraiser. Recently, she became a coach for the Interscholastic Unified Sports in her homeschool group in Dallastown. She encourages Special Olympic athletes as well as Dallastown students to engage in track and field events as unified partners.
