Church Sets Panel, Class

Hempfield United Methodist Church (HUMC), 3050 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will host a special event and a new class.

On Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 1 to 3 p.m., the church's Care Ministry will host a special event centered on the theme "What Matters in the End." The public is invited to attend this afternoon ice cream social, panel discussion, and time of learning, which will be held in the Spirit Cafe of the church.

A panel consisting of a surgeon, a hospice community educator, a funeral director and an HUMC pastor will help participants better understand how to navigate end-of-life decisions and the various options available, and it will provide information that can enhance communications between family members about these difficult choices.

Panelists will include Kelly Townsend, funeral director and preplanning specialist, Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes and Crematory; Dr. Fred Beyer III, physician; Joan Groh, hospice community educator; and pastor Heather Hammel, HUMC pastor of connections and serving.

Family members are encouraged to attend together. A freewill offering will be received. Those who plan to attend are asked to register by Friday, Sept. 13, at http://www.hempfieldumc.org/matters.

Also, the church will offer a new class called "The Way of Discipleship" on Thursdays, Sept. 19 and 26 and Oct. 3, 10, and 17, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Spirit Cafe. The five-session class will be led by the HUMC pastoral team.

The class will introduce participants to five core abilities that benefit disciples of Jesus Christ: communing with God, knowing the Scriptures, developing Christlike character, enjoying life with other believers, and investing in others.

The class will conclude with an option to receive the sacrament of baptism or to reaffirm the baptism of one's childhood. Preregistered child care is available. Readers are asked to register at http://www.hempfieldumc.org/discipleship by Wednesday, Sept. 18.
