New Freedom Fest Planned

Sep 21, 2019 - 10:00 am

The annual New Freedom Fest, sponsored by New Freedom Heritage, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is an old-time festival highlighting small-town life, all centered on the historic town of New Freedom.

The fun-filled day for adults and children alike will feature a variety of food, children's games, pumpkin painting, face painting, a slide, a doughnut eating contest, artists and crafters, nonprofit organizations, demonstration artists, pony rides, train rides, and more. Brochures, with participants listed, will be available at the Heritage table and some vendor tables.

Three stages will feature music and entertainment. At 4 p.m. Mike Mumford, IBMA Banjo Player of the Year award winner, will headline the event. The bluegrass band Line Drive will perform with Mumford. Other stages will include the EMC Performing Arts Studio, Kim's Karate demonstrations, and the Science Guy.

The Pet Parade, sponsored by Country Comfort Kennels, will begin at 2 p.m. Participants may sign up before 2 p.m. at Country Comfort and Animal Rescue. The nominal fee to participate will benefit the animal rescue.

The Heritage Museum of New Freedom, which features New Freedom-area history, will be open all day and will be hosted by local residents. Authors will sign their books on the porch of the museum.

Rides on the Steam Into History train will be available. The Stewartstown Railroad Company will also offer rides on the Speeder Cars heading south.

Because of construction, parking will be limited to the borough municipal parking lot on Front and High streets. A bus shuttle parking service will be provided. At 9 a.m., buses will begin picking up passengers at the Mason-Dixon Baptist Church, 713 Campbell Road, and at the New Freedom Community Center (Farmers Market) on Main Street. There will be no parking on Franklin Street, across from Seven, or at the Marge Goodfellow Park. Handicapped-accessible parking will be at the Whistle Stop Bike Shop on Franklin Street. Shuttle service will end at 6 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted at http://www.newfreedomheritage.org or visit the Heritage table or museum on the Freedom Green. For more details, readers may call Diane Folger at 717-227-2891 or visit the above website.
