Shovels in hand, U-GRO Learning Centres' students and friends participated in a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 10 for a new early education child care center to serve the Brownstown, Akron, and Ephrata community. Along with U-GRO's president and CEO, Greg Holsinger, and construction partner Benchmark Construction's founder and chairman of the board, Robert Brandt Jr., the students put shovels to soil and symbolically broke ground on the construction project, located near Schaum's Corner, next to Benchmark Construction's corporate headquarters at 4121 Oregon Pike.
A spring 2020 opening is targeted for the 15,000-square-foot facility, which will provide state-of-the-art learning classrooms, a 1,800-square-foot indoor play space, and a custom-designed 12,000-square-foot outdoor playground. Up to 150 children will be served daily through full- and part-time programs for children ages 6 weeks to 8 years. As U-GRO's 14th location in central Pennsylvania, the $3 million project is planned to employ up to 32 full- or part-time employees.
