Library To Honor Healys

Paul Smith Library of Southern York County will honor Tom and Betty Healy as its first honorees during its inaugural Honors program and reception at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13. The Healys will be recognized for their many years of dedicated service to the library and the community. The public is invited to attend the event, which will be held at the library, 80 Constitution Ave., Shrewsbury. Registration is requested by Monday, Sept. 30.

According to library director Michele Lefler, the newly established Honors event recognizes leaders who have made the community a better place to live and learn. According to Lefler, Betty, who will be honored posthumously, became involved with the library when she and Tom moved to southern York County in 1998. She continuously served as a staff member or volunteer. Tom joined the Friends of Paul Smith Library soon after it was formed, and he served as the group's president for several years.

In addition to their involvement with the library, the Healys volunteered at the Lord's Lunch at St. John Lutheran Church in New Freedom, helping to prepare food for those in need. Tom is currently a volunteer at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in New Freedom. Tom and Betty were married for 52 years beginning in 1966, and they have three adult children: Anne Jones of Towson, Md.; Kerry Healy of Towson, Md.; and John Healy of Acton, Mass.

The Paul Smith Honors ceremony will include commentary by guest speakers who will pay tribute to the Healys. Betty's high school friend Catherine Mueller, her cousin Michael Mueller, and Susan Mareck, principal of Saint John the Baptist Catholic School, will speak at the event. A reception will follow their tributes.

A key component of the Paul Smith Honors event is to raise funds to continue providing services and programs to the community. Contributions to the Honors Fund are welcome by visiting http://donate.yorklibraries.org.
