Library Announces Upcoming Events
This summer, young patrons at the Village Library of Morgantown were invited to participate in the Summer Reading Program, which asked them to log the number of minutes that they read from June 19 through the end of the program on Aug. 24. Those who logged 1,000 minutes were eligible to receive a T-shirt.
To honor those who completed the goal, a T-shirt awards program was held on Oct. 7 at the library. Pam Mohl, children's library director, reported that approximately 90 young patrons were rewarded with a T-shirt. Although not all of those were able to attend the event, about 30 youngsters were recognized individually and presented with their T-shirt. The T-shirt design featured the program's theme, "A Universe of Stories," and an astronaut attempting to catch a book in space.
During the Summer Reading Program, Mohl explained, participants were given simulated passports and airplane tickets. Children and teenagers were asked to note on their tickets when they read for five minutes. When they reached 50 minutes, tickets were turned in to the library's circulation desk. For each plane ticket turned in, the patron's passport was stamped. Students who completed all of the destinations - reading for 1,000 minutes - were given a T-shirt.
"Congratulations to all of you. You did a lot of good reading. We are so proud of you," Mohl told the youths. She explained that Morgan Corporation of Morgantown sponsored the cost of the T-shirts again this year. "My daughter Sarah designed the shirt this year," Mohl added.
Fatisha Quainoo, a member of the human resources department at Morgan Corporation, was on hand to help pass out the T-shirts. "We value young students," she said. "The younger that students start (to read), the earlier their education can start in reading, writing and spelling. Morgan Corporation thanks you for participating, and we are wowed by the number of students (who took part). Even from last year to this year, the number continues to grow."
Following the T-shirt distribution, attendees enjoyed refreshments. Morgan Corporation also distributed free notebooks and model Morgan trucks.
Mohl also made an announcement about upcoming library programming. Story Adventures is offered for preschoolers on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. Led by Mohl, the story time program includes games, songs, stories and crafts.
Gentle yoga for adults, led by instructor Charee Smith, is offered at the library every Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is requested by contacting Smith at CJY@gmail.com.
The library will hold a Family Movie Night on Friday, Oct. 25, at 6:30 p.m. Popcorn will be provided.
A craft fair will be held at the library on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vendors will offer a variety of products and handmade items, including ornaments, owls, knitted items, jewelry and etched glass. Children who attend will be given candy; costumes are welcome.
