Local trick-or-treaters are invited to donate their excess Halloween candy in support of U.S. troops and first responders through Operation Gratitude. The goodies will be shipped to the organization for inclusion in care packages to service members deployed overseas and to first responders in the area.
Dr. Maria Meliton of M2 Dentistry for Children & Teens noted that Operation Gratitude's Halloween candy give-back program aims to reduce excess sugar consumption and prevent dental decay in children while helping them to enjoy Halloween in moderation and teaching them the importance of saying thank you to all who serve. In 2016, 533,891 pounds of Halloween candy was sent to Operation Gratitude for distribution through its care package programs. Carolyn Blashek, founder of Operation Gratitude, noted that the program has shipped more than 1.9 million care packages containing items such as DVDs, handmade scarves, and hygiene products, along with Halloween candy.
Candy and handwritten letters or drawings to service members will be accepted at M2 Dentistry for Children & Teens, 2135 Noll Drive, Suite B, Lancaster, on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 4 and 5, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In exchange for each donation, Go 'N Bananas game cards will be given. There will also be a drawing for three $100 Target gift cards.
