Library To Host Programs

Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, has posted its upcoming programming. Unless otherwise noted, all programs are free and require preregistration. Readers are encouraged to register online at http://www.mslibrary.org or by calling the library at 717-653-1510. More information is available by calling or visiting the library.

The Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library will hold an Election Day bake sale at the library on Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 7 a.m. until the goodies are sold out. Additionally, the Friends group will hold its annual Holiday Gift, Book, and Bake Sale on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The library will participate in the Extraordinary Give on Nov. 22 and community members are invited to consider donating to the library by visiting http://www.extragive.org on that day. Additionally, the library will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day.

The library will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and will be closed on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 28.

Amelia Bedelia, portrayed by Miss Jan, will visit for a silly story time on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m.

Family Story Time will be offered on Monday, Nov. 4, at 10:30 a.m. at the East Donegal Township Municipal Building, 190 Rock Point Road, Maytown, and on Monday, Nov. 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the former First National Bank building, 100 Market St., Marietta. It will also be offered on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 13 and 14, at 10:30 a.m. at the library. Families may enjoy stories, songs, and a craft based on a theme of the week.

Sing, Shake, and Sway Story Time, set for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, Nov. 6 and 20, and Thursday, Nov. 21, will encourage children to interact and move to songs and stories.

The Read for the Record Story Time will be held on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 10:30 a.m. Attendees are invited to join Miss Jan at the library as the group tries to break last year's record of reading the same book on the same day. This year's book is "Thank You, Omu!" by Oge Mora. The annual campaign was launched more than a decade ago to highlight the importance of building early literacy and language skills for every child.

During Preschool Super Science on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 10:30 a.m., preschoolers age 3 and up can engage in science-based activities that teach them about the world around them.

A six-week conversational Spanish course for homeschooled students age 7 and up will be offered at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, Nov. 12 to Dec. 17. The course will end with a fun fiesta on the last day. Parents should plan for their children to attend all sessions.

Lego Club, for people of all ages, will take place at 6 p.m. on Nov. 12. Legos will be provided.

STEM Club - Steam! will be offered on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. for children in grades three to six and will feature Troy from the Railroad Museum. The program will use a working miniature steam locomotive model, artifacts, and other visual aids to explain how the real engines operated, the ways steam power was used, and how the technology evolved over time. Space is limited.

During Homeschool Art Class on Monday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m., children age 7 and up may create theme-inspired art based upon the works of a particular artist.

Fun Family Bingo has been set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Sensory Story Time will be offered on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 10:30 a.m. The 30-minute interactive program is geared toward children ages 3 to 5 who are differently abled, who may be on the autism spectrum, who have sensory processing issues, or who feel overwhelmed by noises or crowds. A 30-minute time of monitored social play will be available afterward. Registration is required, and space is limited.

During Thanksgiving Story Time on Nov. 27 at 10:30 a.m., Miss Jan will read her favorite holiday story, "A Turkey for Thanksgiving" by Eve Bunting, and will offer a themed craft.

A Charlie Brown-Style Thanksgiving, set for Saturday, Nov. 30, at 10 a.m., will offer a "meal" just like Snoopy and Charlie Brown served their friends. The movie will be available to watch, as well.

Bake-a-Pie With Carrie has been set for Saturday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m. Carrie will provide all the ingredients for participants age 13 and up to make two or three different varieties of pie from scratch in mini form. The class is free.

During Teen Anime on Nov. 16 at 6 p.m., teenagers age 13 and up may socialize with other anime lovers, watch shows, and plan anime-based activities. The club will start watching the "Avatar" series. Attendees may bring a light snack to share.

A game night for adults has been set for Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. Adults are welcome to bring a game to play.

Closely Knit, a group for avid knitters or those who aspire to knit, will meet at 1 p.m. on Mondays, Nov. 11 and 25. Attendees may knit or crochet individual projects, and no registration is necessary.

The Friends group will meet on Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. New members are always welcome.

The Quilt Study Club, which meets every other month on the second Wednesday from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., will hold its next meeting on Nov. 13. The community is invited to attend the gathering of quilt lovers, which is run by Ann Holte, who is not affiliated with the library.

The Needle Felting Friends Club, led by local soft sculpture artist Victoria Hans, will meet on Nov. 13 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. People who want to learn the art of needle felting, along with needle-felters who would like to share ideas or work in a social setting, are welcome. Materials will be provided to make a felted turkey pin.

A Gathering of Artists Club is a new club that typically meets on the third Wednesday at 6 p.m. The club's November meeting will be on Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. Artists and crafters who enjoy working in the company of other like-minded folks or who want designated time to work on a project are invited to pack their materials and attend. Painters are asked not to bring oil paints.

Joyful Stitchers Cross-Stitch Club will meet from 9:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Nov. 16. All stitchers, from beginners to ultra-experienced stitchers, can bring their supplies. Those who are new to the hobby can obtain a simple cross-stitch kit at a local craft store, and one of the experienced club members will provide assistance.

The book discussion group focused on the classics will discuss "The Ox-Bow Incident" by Walter Van Tilberg Clark on Nov. 18 at 10:30 a.m. The Lit Lovers book discussion group will discuss "A Gentleman in Moscow" by Armor Towles on Nov. 26 at 6:30 p.m.

All writers, whether recreational or professional, are welcome to work on their current projects or write to prompts during the Writers' Circle at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25.

Paint Like a Pro, a painting class for adults no matter their ability, has been set for Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. During the class, taught by local artist Ron Meckley using the Bob Ross method, participants will paint a scene that they can give as a holiday gift. Artists will have a finished piece at the conclusion of the class. There is a cost, and all supplies are included, excluding the canvas.
