Mauldin Publishing & Literacy House has announced the official release of "Surviving Racism: A Memoir of Life, Love, and Faith - The Charles & Alice Thomas Story" by author Alice Thomas. The book's release date is Saturday, Nov. 9.
In the book, Thomas tells the story of her lifelong love and how she and her husband persevered through racism in the pre- and post-Civil Rights era. Despite struggles, Thomas became an advocate for minorities and a Civil Rights pioneer and activist in the West Chester community.
Born and raised in West Chester, Thomas has been involved in her community since childhood. She served as a counselor in the guidance office at Henderson High School, focusing her career on developing young adults and advancing social justice, integration, and minority representation. In 1978, Thomas helped form the Black Student Union due to a lack of minority leadership in the student government at the time.
In 1998, Dr. Clifford DeBaptiste, who was serving as mayor of West Chester, created the Alice M. Thomas Scholarship Fund to honor the 35 years of service Thomas gave to Henderson, its students, and the community. The fund is an ongoing testament to Thomas' focus on social justice, academic achievement, and community involvement.
