Essay Contest Announced

Elks Lodge 213 is participating in the B.P.O.E. Grand Lodge Americanism Essay Contest. The contest offers students in grades five through eight the opportunity to express views on their pride in America. "What Does Freedom of Speech Mean to Me?" will be the essay theme.

Essays must be typed or legibly printed in ink, and the length is not to exceed 300 words. Judging criteria will be originality, development of theme, and neatness with use of proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. In judging the essays, fifth and sixth grades will be combined and seventh and eighth grades will be combined, with the top three essays from each group selected. A certificate of participation will be given to all entrants. Monetary prizes will be awarded to the three winners of each group.

The deadline for entries is Sunday, Dec. 15. Essays must be submitted to Elks Lodge 213, 223 N. George St., York. All entries must include a personal information page containing the contestant's name, address, phone number, school, teacher's name, and present grade.

All entries will become the property of the Elks. Elks Lodge 213 will send the selected essays on to district competition, which progresses through the state and national levels. Plaques for first-, second-, and third-place winning essays in both groups at the national level will be awarded on Tuesday, July 7, 2020.
