On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS) hosted its second Veterans Day program to honor area men and women who have served to preserve the nation's freedom. A large number of veterans attended the event.
Several years ago, PVIS had held a yearly tribute on Veterans Day, but by 2018, that was no longer the case. When PVIS principal Arlen Mummau met a local veteran at the fall 2018 back-to-school night, he asked lead administrative assistant Christy Collins to organize an event.
During the 2019 observance, a variety of activities were held to share with the students the importance of Veterans Day and what the observance means to United States citizens. A welcome luncheon was offered to participating veterans from the local community. Family members of veterans and host students gathered for the lunch in the media center.
The luncheon was followed by an all-school assembly where guests of honor were recognized. Attendees had the opportunity to hear music performed by the Brave Sounds ensemble and PVIS concert band.
In addition, veterans shared their stories with students, and many veterans brought in items to share. The students also watched a brief video on Veterans Day and wrote "dog tag" thank you cards to veterans. In the parking lot, students had the chance to see a few restored World War II military vehicles.
The idea behind the event is to work with community members to teach students about the contributions and sacrifices America's veterans have made throughout the years that allow Americans to enjoy the freedoms available to them today.
