South Central York County Senior Center, 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, has announced its upcoming schedule of programs and activities. The senior center can arrange for transportation to and from the center for members who no longer drive and do not have transportation to the center. Available through rabbittransit, the service is free for anyone age 60 or over.
The center serves a hot lunch on Mondays through Fridays at 11:30 a.m., and attendees are encouraged to arrive at 11:20 a.m.
Every day, center members can use available exercise equipment and walk in the gym. Additionally, isometric exercises are offered at 9:30 a.m., tai chi is offered at 10:15 a.m. On Mondays, stretch yoga is held at 9:15 a.m. On Tuesdays, Balance & Core is held at 9 a.m. On Wednesday, Weights & Balance is held at 9 a.m. and line dancing is offered at 10 a.m. On Thursday, Zumba Gold takes place at 8:30 a.m. and Beginners' Core & Balance is at 8:30 a.m. On Fridays, Balance & Core is offered at 9 a.m.
The center offers card playing and games every day. Additional offerings include acrylic art class on Mondays at 9:30 a.m. On Tuesdays, watercolor class is held at 9:15 a.m. and the blanket-knotting project is held in the morning. The schedule on Wednesdays includes ceramics at 9:15 a.m. and the blanket-knotting project in the morning. On Thursdays, Walking Through the Bible begins at 8:45 a.m. and Bunco is played at 9:15 a.m. The center aims to have 12 players for Bunco each week. On Fridays, the Friends Together Craft Class is at 9 a.m. and adult coloring is at 10:15 a.m.
The center also offers a class on card making every other Monday after lunch. A quilters' group meets every other Wednesday at 9 a.m. to work on lap robes for veterans and other projects. Center members are also knitting and crocheting hats for Coats of Friendship, a group that collects coats for homeless individuals in the area. Yarn will be supplied.
Once a month, the center offers a movie and popcorn. A nurse visits the center to conduct blood pressure checks on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. A podiatrist visits the center every nine weeks. The next scheduled date is Thursday, Feb. 13, and interested seniors should preregister with the center.
The senior center is selling cookbooks as a fundraiser.
The center seeks individuals who are interested in delivering meals to seniors. Interested volunteers may call 717-235-6060 for more information. Participants will volunteer one morning every four weeks. The Meals on Wheels program delivers more than 50 meals to seniors on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program is again offering free tax preparation service for taxpayers of all ages, especially adults age 50 and older, during the 2019 tax season. The closest location to the South Central York County Senior Center that is offering this service is Shrewsbury Grace United Methodist Church. There is no fee, and AARP membership is not required. Taxpayers should bring their photo ID and proof of the Social Security or ITIN numbers for anyone on the tax return, including children or other claimed dependents. Bringing last year's tax return is also helpful, if available. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers can prepare most personal income tax returns, including those with basic self-employment income.
