LMHS Sets Dinner Fundraiser

Feb 14, 2020 - 6:30 pm

Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) will hold a Sweetheart Dinner on Friday, Feb. 14, at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. The fundraiser will support LMHS' efforts to tell the full story of early Colonial Lancaster County. The event will benefit the Lancaster Longhouse.

Attendees will enjoy a meal of indigenous foods, which may include wild mushroom soup, venison stuffed squash (dried cranberries, pine nuts, and ground venison prepared in an acorn squash), stone-ground corn cakes with wild blueberries, and beverages. Participants will experience an indigenous meal prepared by local Native people who celebrate Native culture and provide education through LMHS partner Circle Legacy Center.

Built in 2013 on the grounds of the 1719 Herr House and Museum, the Lancaster Longhouse is a full-scale reproduction of an Eastern Woodland Native American Longhouse of the type inhabited by local Native communities before Lancaster's influx of European immigrants.

School children, adults, and families from across the U.S. and many from Europe experience the Herr House Museum and Lancaster Longhouse each year. The fundraiser will benefit structural longhouse maintenance and educational programming regarding both historical and current Native life in Lancaster.
