College Posts Art Events

York College, 441 Country Club Road, York, will host an art event series. Unless noted otherwise, events will be held in DeMeester Recital Hall, Wolf Hall. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays; from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

"The Shallow Habit of Seeing" exhibition by James Johnson will be on display through Thursday, Feb. 27, in York College Galleries, Wolf Hall. His art encompasses installation, sculpture, and photography and makes reference to architecture and issues surrounding representation, economics, and power. He is influenced by conceptual art and minimalism.

A screening of the film "Graphic Means" will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11. The feature-length documentary is about the history of graphic design production after the letterpress, focusing on the phototypesetting era and the transition that occurred as a result of the Digital Revolution. A discussion with Briar Levit, director and producer, will follow the film.

Guest artist Deborah Dancy will speak on "Turbulence" at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 12. Dancy is a Guggenheim fellow and professor emeritus at the University of Connecticut.

The "Fine Art and Graphic Design Senior Exhibition" will run from Friday, April 24, through Saturday, May 9. Student presentations will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. In their final semester, fine art and graphic design students will exhibit their final bodies of work and senior projects, respectively, demonstrating the formal and conceptual growth they have achieved. The event will open with PechaKuch-style presentations, followed by a reception and announcement of awards.

An Appell Fellow exhibition by Amber Wiesberg, Class of 2019, will run from Wednesday, May 27, through Saturday, June 27, in the Cora Miller Gallery, Wolf Hall. The Appell Arts Fellowship is an 11-month residency program awarded to a graduate of York College's art program.

"Typorama 9.0" will be on display from May 27 to June 27 in the Brossman Gallery, Wolf Hall. The exhibit will demonstrate the varied media use and experimentation of the college's graphic design program. Students engage in wordplay, expression, and analysis of form in a distinctively letter-based way.
