"Alice In Wonderland" Tea Party Fundraiser Set

Feb 22, 2020 - 2:00 am

The Friends of the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana will hold their fifth annual fundraising tea on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. next door to the library at Chantry Place, located at 15 N. Bridge St., Christiana. The theme for this year's event is "Alice in Wonderland," with decor reminiscent of the Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Costumes related to the theme are encouraged but not required. Tea hats are also encouraged.

The event is designed for adults and teenagers age 14 and up. Admission will include tea and light refreshments such as tea sandwiches, sweets and savories. Magician Noah Fitz from the Professional Magicians Club of Lancaster County will perform.

Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance by Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the library or by calling 610-593-6683. Members of groups who wish to be seated together should alert the library when they purchase tickets.

The site is handicapped-accessible. Anyone in need of accessible seating should let the library know when purchasing tickets. The popular event sells out quickly, so early ticket purchases are encouraged.

The Friends of Moores Memorial Library raise money to help meet the library's annual budget, and the group is committing to raise $15,000 this year. One new project the library is working on this year is preserving its collection of historic newspapers and documents in digital format.

The Friends also provide volunteers to operate the Read Moore Book Store, located in the lower level of the library. The bookstore offers new and gently used books at reasonable prices, as well as a children's corner and a section for young adults. For more information, readers may visit http://www.facebook.com/ReadMooreBookStore.

In addition to the tea, the Friends organize a wide range of fundraising events, including a Mother's Day plant sale, the Princess Ball in May, book sales and a golf tournament.

The library has announced that several upcoming events have been planned.

The library conference room will be the location for How Money Works, a workshop on how to manage finances, on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon. This free financial seminar is not organized by the library; rather, it is a community event sponsored by the Lancaster Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and Mount Zion AME Church of Atglen. Advance registration is requested and may be made by calling the organizers at 484-995-0823.

Also on Feb. 8, a workshop - Introduction to Book Folding - will be held in the conference room from 1 to 3 p.m. Book folding uses folding and cutting skills to make decorative patterns in the page edges of a book. Samples can be seen in the showcases at the library.

"We're going to work on a simple (folding pattern). Because we sell old books in our bookstore, we thought that would be a great thing to go with it," said Jeannette Kolb, president of the Friends of the Library.

There is a fee for materials for this workshop, and participants are asked to bring a sharp pencil or mechanical pencil with them. Readers may register in advance by calling the library at 610-593-6683. Space is limited.

A special STEM program for students will take place on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. A weekly Crypto Club for students ages 7 to 12 will begin on Saturday, March 7, at 1 p.m. and continue for four weeks. Teenagers who would like to help are welcome.

Continuing clubs and programs at the library include yoga on Tuesdays at 6 p.m.; Lego Club on Thursdays, Feb. 13 and 27, at 6 p.m.; a book group for adults on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 4 p.m.; Knit and Natter, a knitting and crocheting group, on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 1 p.m.; and preschool story time every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
