Green Eggs And Hamming It Up

Who wants birthday cake when you could celebrate with green eggs and ham instead? That line of thought might not carry over throughout the rest of the year, but when the birthday of legendary children's book author Dr. Seuss rolls around on March 2, libraries across the country take it upon themselves to celebrate with green eggs and ham breakfasts in his honor.

The Milanof-Schock Library has been hosting an annual green eggs and ham breakfast for more than 25 years, said children's librarian Jan Betty - best known to local library patrons simply as Miss Jan. "It sells out every year, so if people want to come they should get their tickets early," said Miss Jan.

This year's green eggs and ham breakfast will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. Tickets are currently on sale, with separate prices for adults and for children. Tickets must be purchased in person at the library.

Green eggs and ham will of course be the stars of the menu, and regular-colored eggs and assorted pastries and beverages will be served too.

Miss Jan will read "Green Eggs and Ham" along with a few other Seuss stories. Her personal favorites by Seuss are "Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?" because the reader gets to make sounds, and "If I Ran the Circus."

"Ever since I was little, I loved 'If I Ran the Circus,' but I have no idea why," said Miss Jan with a shrug.

Aside from food and read-alouds, families may enjoy Seuss-themed coloring pages and sing-alongs as well as photo opportunities with the Cat in the Hat, who will once again be portrayed by Patrick Gerlach.

The event is sponsored by the Norlanco-Rheems Kiwanis Club, and affiliated clubs from Donegal School District - Key Club from the high school and Builders Club from the junior high - will help serve the food.

"It's a really good community group event because we have board members and staff and a lot of different groups who make it possible," said Miss Jan, noting that all of the food is donated by local businesses. Any funds raised at the breakfast go directly to the library for children's programming and more.
