Hospice To Offer Support Programs

Hospice & Community Care and the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss have slated upcoming support programs. Unless noted otherwise, programs are free and registration is required.

Adult drop-in groups will include a presentation and informal time to speak with others. Registration is not required. The Coping With the Loss of a Parent or Sibling group will meet on Tuesday, March 3, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Pathways Center, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, Mount Joy. The Coping With the Loss of a Spouse or Companion group will meet on Tuesday, Feb 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Essa Flory Center, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, and on Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Pathways Center. A three-week program series for the newly bereaved will be held on Tuesdays, March 10, 17 and 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Pathways Center. This series provides an overview of common grief responses and is intended to help attendees begin to identify coping tools. The registration deadline is March 3, with those interested asked to call 717-391-2413 or 800-924-7610 at least one week prior to the start of the group to speak with a bereavement counselor.

GRASP (Grief Recovery After a Substance Passing) will be held on March 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Pathways Center. The free group is intended to provide compassion and understanding for individuals who had a loved one who died as a result of substance abuse or addiction. The Women's Giving Circle will hold a social on Thursday, March 5, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Ave. This will be an opportunity for women to mix and mingle while learning about the group, which provides support for families with a member facing serious illness. Coping Kids and Teens will be a six-week series on Thursdays from March 12 to April 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This program will be for children, teenagers and adults coping with the death of a loved one. Families will gather for a light supper prior to each session. After the meal, they will break into age-specific groups to provide peer support. Attendees will meet with a counselor to determine if the group is the best support option for them. Interested individuals are asked to call 717-391-2413 or 800-924-7610 by Friday, Feb. 28, to schedule an appointment.

A Christian service of remembrance will take place on Sunday, March 22, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. This service will memorialize loved ones who died in 2019. Hospice & Community Care chaplain Kevin Frain will provide words of reflection. No registration is needed.

Hospice & Community Care will host a new volunteer orientation on Tuesdays, March 24 and 31, and Thursdays, March 26 and April 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Essa Flory Center. No special skills or experience are required to join hundreds of others volunteering with Hospice & Community Care. A secular service of remembrance will take place on Sunday, March 29, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, 863 S. George St., York. This service will memorialize loved ones who died in 2019. Frain will provide words of reflection.

"Mindfulness and Grief" will be a three-week series offered on Fridays, April 10, 17 and 24, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Pathways Center. This series will address the benefits of practicing mindfulness as a tool for being present with one's grief and improving one's overall well-being. Marygrace Lomboy of Hospice & Community Care will provide several forms of mindfulness to practice each week and help attendees connect mindfulness tools to common grief reactions. The registration deadline is Friday, April 3.

"Growing Through Grief" will be a six-week series offered on Mondays from April 13 to May 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pathways Center. Adults grieving a death that occurred at least nine months ago will explore the impact of their loss, who they are apart from their loved one, and how they continue to reorganize their life. Interested individuals will first meet with a bereavement counselor to determine if the group will meet their needs. The registration deadline is Monday, April 6.
