The American Association of University Women (AAUW) has always encouraged citizens exercising their right to vote. York Branch AAUW brings that promotion closer to home by alerting the public to Pennsylvania's new voting rules intended to make voting easier.
First, new voters will have more time to register. This year's registration deadline is Monday, April 13, for the primary election on Tuesday, April 28. The registration deadline is Monday, Oct. 19, for the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Second, registered voters no longer have to provide an excuse to use a mail-in ballot. They must, however, apply for a mail-in ballot by Tuesday, April 21, for the primary election and by Tuesday, Oct. 27, for the general election. Those same deadlines apply for absentee ballots that do require excuses. Acceptable excuses are absence from the area or illness. Absentee and mail-in ballots must be returned to the local election office by 8 p.m. the day of the election.
Pennsylvania's official voters' website is http://www.voterspa.com. This site may be used to register to vote, to apply for a mail-in or absentee ballot, and to find more detailed information.
