A Household Hazardous Waste Collection event for Chester County residents will be held on Saturday, April 18, in the parking lot at Octorara High School, 226 Highland Road, Atglen. The collection site will open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
No electronics, computers, televisions, or appliances will be accepted. Items containing freon will be not accepted. Additional unacceptable materials include latex paint, used motor oil, tires, asbestos, explosives, propane, helium or gas cylinders, household alkaline batteries, PCBs, large drums, ammunition, and waste that is medical, infectious, radioactive, commercial, industrial or unidentified.
No more more than 220 pounds or 25 gallons of hazardous product per household will be accepted. Common acceptable products include oil paint, aerosols, pesticides, swimming pool chemicals, gasoline, rechargeable batteries, flammables, and fluorescent bulbs.
Residents are cautioned not to mix substances and to package them securely in a box or crate. Residents are also asked to take their boxes and reusable containers back home.
Last year, more than 200,000 pounds of materials were safely collected at Chester County's events. To help reduce costs, residents can purchase the smallest quantity that they will need to avoid leftovers; substitute less toxic ingredients for some pesticides and cleaning products; or choose the least toxic product.
Anyone who needs to dispose of latex paint should solidify it by either air drying small quantities or pouring the paint into a plastic trash bag with sawdust, clay-based kitty litter or rags and placing the bag and the open paint can in the trash after the paint has solidified. Paint hardener may also be purchased from hardware stores. Only oil based paint will be accepted the Household Hazardous Waste Collection events.
